Canberra - Founded around the 1820s, Canberra wasn't much to look at in its early years. Then called "Canberry," or "Canbury," an Anglicization of an aboriginal term for "meeting place," Canberra was little more than a loose collection of people and buildings. But the city grew in the 1800s and was thriving by the time the Commonwealth of Australia was created in 1901. The obvious choices for the capital were Melbourne and Sydney, Australia's two biggest cities. But those two cities had a fierce rivalry, and each wanted to protect its economic and political interests against the other. Canberra was officially chosen to be Australia's capital in 1909, and construction soon began on its capitol buildings. Canberra's capitol buildings were complete in 1927, and the government was able to move in. Canberra has been Australia's capital ever since.:
