In 1873, businessman Antônio de Lacerda added a steam-powered elevator, and today, the elevator is still named “Elevador Lacerda” in his honor. In 1930, it was redesigned to include a walkway, and in 1961, the elevator cars were updated to carry 32 people at a time. Today, the elevator has four elevator cars — each capable of carrying 128 people at a time. Elevador Lacerda can travel 240 feet up the cliffside in under 30 seconds!:
