In 1873, businessman Antônio de Lacerda added a steam-powered elevator, and today, the elevator is still named “Elevador Lacerda” in his honor. In 1930, it was redesigned to include a walkway, and in 1961, the elevator cars were updated to carry 32 people at a time.
