Step 1 : Introduction to the question " What is dermatitis? "
...
Dermatitis is a skin inflammation. There are many types of dermatitis - the most notable being eczema, which is also known as atopic eczema. It usually runs in families and can develop in both adulthood and infancy - the latter being the more common.
There is no known cure for dermatitis. Some suffer constant flare-ups while many do not experience symptoms at all. During flare-ups, skin may appear in dry, rough patches and are VERY itchy.
Contact dermatitis can be caused by a substance simply touching your skin and can develop into rashes, which vary from a burning sensation to blistering skin. If there is an allergic reaction to something, the outer substance may not directly cause a rash but instead cause damage to the immune system.
Cradle Cap in babies can also be a form of dermatitis, known as Seborrheic dermatitis. It usually appears on the scalp but can also appear on the face, ears and chest. It often causes scaly patches, skin discolouration and dandruff. Stress or lack of sleep can worsen these symptoms.
While each form of dermatitis has its own symptoms, in general, the symptoms of dermatitis may include: rashes, blisters, itchy skin, painful skin, with stinging or burning, dry, cracked skin and swelling. In most cases, there is some discolouration of the skin colour which will appear differently depending on the skin tone.
Causes of dermatitis depends on the type suffered but environmental triggers are often the cause.
