Step 1 : Introduction to the question " Which breed of dog is informally known as a 'sausage dog'? "
...
The dachshund is a small dog with a long body and short legs. 'Dachshund' is a German word that means 'badger dog', but they are often nicknamed 'sausage dog' or 'wiener dog' due to their elongated shape.
A fully-grown dachshund typically weighs between 16 and 28 lb. (7 to 12.7 kg). The American journalist H. L. Mencken jokingly said, “A dachshund is a half-dog high and a dog-and-a-half long.” Dachshunds come in many colours, including reddish-brown, black and tan. They are often described as 'cute' due to their deep eyes and many facial expressions.
Whilst dachshunds can be playful dogs, they like to chase small animals and can be strong-headed and stubborn. This means they can be difficult dogs to train. Nevertheless, dachshunds are often very loyal to their owners.
Due to the dachshunds' short stature and long body, they are prone to spinal problems. Obese dachshunds are more prone to injury because the extra weight puts a strain on their spine. Owners are encouraged to prevent their dogs from climbing stairs unless it is absolutely necessary. Fortunately, because they are small, it is easy to carry a dachshund, but even this must be done with care.
The dachshund was a particularly favourite breed of dog of the British Queen Victoria.
