It stands 1,281 metres tall and last erupted in the 20th century in 1944. Mount Vesuvius is famous for one of the most violent volcanic eruptions in history. August 24th, 79AD began as any normal day would for the residents of the ancient Roman towns of Pompeii, Stabiae and Herculaneum, yet it would end in destruction. At noon, without warning, nearby Mount Vesuvius exploded. Pompeii was buried in six metres of volcanic ash. Herculaneum and Stabiae were wiped out by boiling pyroclastic flows (surges of super-heated ash and steam) with temperatures of upto 400 degrees. Many people were suffocated by poisonous fumes or crushed by falling buildings. All three towns would lie buried for centuries until excavation began in the 20th century.
