In the 1920s, Ted Healey, a musician and comedian, had a show called Ted Healey and His Stooges, in which he performed alongside a pair of bumbling assistants. They were brothers Moe and Shemp Howard. Later, violinist Larry Fine joined them.
Thus, the four formed a group that quickly became known to the public. In 1930, they had their first Hollywood film for Fox, called Soup to Nuts. The film didn't do well, but Fox offered the group a contract. However, they didn't want to include Ted Healey. This was the beginning of the Three Stooges.
