...Sequoyah was the son of Nathaniel Gist, a Virginia fur trader, and his Cherokee mother Wuh-the of the Paint Clan of Tennessee. Raised by his mother, he never learned to read, write or speak English. He became convinced, however, that the secret to the white people's success was their written language. It was the written language that allowed them to collect and share more knowledge than could a people dependent on memory and a spoken language alone.
