...Nevada is east of California, but Reno is west of Los Angeles. Sounds weird, right? This is due to the shape of the individual states and their borders: California curves inward near Los Angeles, while the western border of Nevada isn't curved. The numbers back it up: The latitude and longitude coordinates of Reno are 39°31N, 119°49W, whereas Los Angeles’ are 34°03′N 118°15′W.
