[Answer] What started the feud between the Hatfields and McCoys?

Step 1 : Introduction to the question "What started the feud between the Hatfields and McCoys?"

...The Hatfields and McCoys, along with their kinfolk and neighbors, fought a legendary feud in the 1880s and 1890s that drew international attention. The Hatfields lived in West Virginia and the McCoys lived in Kentucky. The families' lands bordered Tug Fork, a stream that divided the two states. The story goes that Randall McCoy, patriarch of the family, believed a Hatfield stole one of his hogs. The families were also on opposites during the American Civil War, with the McCoys supporting the Union and the Hatfields were Confederates. The theft of the hog supposedly happened in 1878, but major fighting didn't begin until 1882, when Ellison Hatfield died from gunshot injuries after a brawl with McCoys. Source: Britannica.com
