Bob Dole - The 1970s were a time of great political upheaval. In 1973, Spiro Agnew resigned as Richard Nixon's vice president amid accusations of bribery, extortion, and tax evasion. Facing his own misconduct allegations, Nixon nominated House Speaker Gerald Ford as Agnew's replacement after consulting with Congressional leaders who knew that Nixon would likely be next to leave office and thought Ford had the character and fortitude necessary to become president. When Nixon resigned on August 9, 1974, Ford became the first person to assume the presidency who was not elected as either the president or vice president. Later that year, Nelson Rockefeller, the former governor of New York and grandson of the billionaire oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller, was appointed as Ford's new VP. Rockefeller was not popular with some conservatives, so Ford relented to pressure to drop him and put up Bob Dole, a senator from Kansas, as his running mate in 1976. Jimmy Carter and Walter Mondale beat the pair 297 to 240 in the electoral college and earned nearly 1.7 million more total votes. Bob Dole went on to win the Republican presidential nomination in 1996, but he was unable to oust incumbent Bill Clinton at the ballot box.:
