Northern Ireland - Located on the north coast of Northern Ireland, Giant’s Causeway is an area of 40,000 basalt columns sticking out of the sea, making for a truly otherworldly site. The basalt columns formed 50–60 million years ago after volcanic activity. However, according to local legend, the columns are the remains of a causeway built by the Irish giant Fionn mac Cumaill — hence the causeway’s name — in order to challenge the Scottish giant Benandonner to a fight. The causeway was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1986 and was named the fourth greatest natural wonder in the United Kingdom by Radio Times in 2015.:
