In 1971, the then-track and field coach wanted to design spike-less shoes that were lighter and faster but still gripped the pavement. While discussing this idea with his wife over breakfast, he looked at the grooves of the waffle iron she was using and couldn’t help but see the soles of a running shoe. He immediately took the waffle iron to his lab, made urethane, and used the rubber mold of the waffle iron for the 1974 design of the Waffle Trainer. This launched the decades-long success of Nike sneakers and, to this day, Waffle Trainers are still on the shelves.:
