Black and yellow - It’s difficult to imagine the Golden Gate Bridge in any other color than its iconic burnt orange — but it almost didn’t turn out that way. The Navy originally lobbied for the bridge to be painted with black and yellow stripes to make it more visible to ships passing through the notoriously foggy Bay Area. When the steel for the new bridge arrived in San Francisco, some of it was coated in a distinctive reddish-orange primer to help protect it from corrosion and wear. The bridge's architect liked the color, compared to the typical black and gray tones of other bridges, and advocated for its use in the final bridge. While the Navy didn’t get their black and yellow stripes, the color did answer their original ask — that the bridge become an unmistakable sight on the San Francisco Bay.:
