The striking building, designed by Canadian-American architect Frank Gehry, led to what’s now called the “Bilbao Effect,” referring to a city’s transformation after the construction of a noteworthy piece of architecture. The sweeping curves around the exterior of the building were designed to catch the light, while the interior was also designed with light in mind, brought in through the large atrium that offers views of the surrounding Basque Country and the estuary. Inaugurated by Spanish King Juan Carlos I in October of 1997 and situated along the Nerving River, the museum features a vast collection of Spanish and international artworks that draw millions of visitors each year. :
