Writing was in his blood, apparently; Fitzgerald was named for Francis Scott Key, a distant relative of his father's, who wrote the lyrics to "The Star-Spangled Banner." The young Fitzgerald, who had always gone by Scott among family and friends, grew up shuffling between New York cities as the son of a salesman. He quickly became a well-known writer of short fiction and novels, though his own turbulent personal life was just as famous as his novel about the lavish life of 1920s socialites came to be. Fitzgerald published a number of works, tried an unsuccessful career as a Hollywood screenwriter, and left behind a half-completed novel when he died in 1940 at age 44.:
