But soon he realized that manicurists were buying huge amounts of his acrylic material to make artificial nails, since they had few dedicated products of their own. Before long, he’d hired a chemist, and his packages of acrylic powder, liquid, and primer were being delivered to salons around Los Angeles. Odontorium Products Inc. became OPI, and thanks also to Schaeffer’s sister-in-law Suzi Weiss-Fischmann (who helped run the company), the brand became known for its innovative colors and fun, often humorous polish names. Many are themed around a specific place — a recent Milan collection, for example, includes an orange polish color called “My Italian is a Little Rusty” and a teal called “Drama at La Scala.”:
