iPod - In October 2001, Apple debuted the iPod, an “ultra-portable” MP3 player that would revolutionize the music industry. MP3s had already been around for a while — they were invented in 1987 by German scientists looking to shrink video files for easier use on computers — but none of the players were a hit. The first digital music player was created in 1998 by South Korean company SaeHan (it was called MPMan F10), but failed to take off. When Apple started working on its own digital music player, they hired a young engineer named Tony Fadell to work on a hush-hush project called P-68 and codenamed "Dulcimer.” Fadell’s first mock-ups were made out of foam and cardboard. One was about the size of a cigarette packet, and Apple CEO Steve Jobs loved it — but was adamant that every song should be accessible in three presses of a button, or people would think the device was too much work and give up. The rest is history.:
