Indonesia - A large, white building shaped like a chicken isn’t what you expect to find in the middle of the Indonesian forest — or anywhere, for that matter. In fact, Gereja Ayam — nicknamed the Chicken Church — is supposed to resemble a dove, and it’s not exactly a church, either. The structure was the brainchild of an Indonesian man named Daniel Alamsjah, who built it as a temple for all faiths after receiving a vision of a dove on a hill in 1988. Construction was plagued by financial problems and complaints from locals, and the project was eventually abandoned mid-construction in 2000. The site became a playground for vandals, until an unlikely spotlight in international media in 2015 brought it to the world’s attention. Alamsjah began charging tourists a small entrance fee, which finally became enough to finish the project. The building is no longer abandoned, and now filled with the handiwork of local artists and artisans. :
