Released in 1977, the Sylvester Stallone-headed underdog story ramps every athlete up with its famous trumpet intro. “Gonna Fly Now” topped the charts the summer after the film’s release. Ironically, the film’s composer, Bill Conti, wasn’t even the first choice to score “Rocky.” Two composers before him declined, due to the low film budget. And because of the deal, Conti supplied nearly everything — from the rehearsal studio to the musicians. The entire “Rocky” score was recorded in a three-hour session. Conti even urged his wife and some coworkers to sing the lyrics for free — granted, there were only 30 words.:
