And the best of the best compete each September at the National Giant Vegetable Championship, part of the Malvern Autumn Show in Worcestershire. The competition originated from a group of enthusiasts at a Welsh bar in the 1980s as a challenge to see who could grow the largest pumpkin. It became an annual event, and kept growing from there (pun intended), eventually attracting competitors from across the United Kingdom. Today, growers compete in more than 30 super-sized categories, including Heaviest Aubergine and Longest Radish. Entries at the competitions frequently break world records — in 2016, David Thomas from Cornwall grew the world's heaviest red cabbage, weighing in at more than 50 pounds!:
