This consolidated 20 existing passenger railroad services into the National Railroad Passenger Corporation, which later became known as Amtrak. The first official Amtrak service left New York City’s Penn Station just after midnight on May 1, 1971 and set out for Philadelphia. Over the following years, additional routes were quickly introduced — Amtrak now serves 33 routes to more than 500 destinations in 46 U.S. states and Canada.
