California - These cypress trees were planted around 1930 framing the road to the KPH Maritime Radio Receiving Station at Point Reyes National Seashore in California. The lighthouse was built here in 1870, at the edge of an outcropping overlooking the Pacific Ocean. In 1929, the small Art Deco-style facility was built to receive ship-to-shore wireless telegraph communications using Morse code and teletype. Much of the original equipment remains intact and functional. The Monterey cypress trees, which are endemic to central California, were planted at Point Reyes because they are one of the few species capable of withstanding the strong winds of the coast.:
