Huskies pulled the sleds for some of the earliest explorers in the polar regions. The first huskies to travel to Antarctica were part of a British Expedition in 1889. Even as motorized sleds became popular, huskies still accompanied most expeditions because of their versatility. However, in 1991, the Protocol on Environmental Protection was enacted, banning all non-native species (except humans). The goal was to prevent the introduction of infection or disease from outside. So no more huskies in Antarctica ... or any other dogs for that matter. :
