The château’s stunning design is a cornerstone of French Baroque architecture. The garden is notable for being a predecessor of landscape architect André Le Nôtre’s designs for Versailles. In August 1661, the king was invited to the castle, and Fouquet was arrested for treason three weeks later, with most of his artwork repossessed by the king. Those who worked on the castle, from gardeners to craftsmen, were designated to build other royal properties, which is how Versailles came about.:
